Why choose a bespoke furniture maker?

West Sussex: Dovetail Joinery

You may already have a very specific idea that you would like brought to life by a cabinet maker, or perhaps your design brief is more fluid. It could be to create a luxury piece that is truly special.

We are equally comfortable developing your existing ideas, or starting with a blank piece of paper to create something unique. We have a huge variety of high quality materials, wood types, finishes, and joinery techniques at our disposal.

Often our clients look to us for wooden furniture that is of a higher quality and craftsmanship than mass-market alternatives. It can also be to solve a problem such as making the best use of the space you have available. We strive to create designs that perfectly complement your lifestyle, individual personality or existing decor.

We work hard to differentiate ourselves from the fast fashion and disposable nature of many mass produced brands.

Understanding the Brief

Your point of contact from start to finish is the furniture maker and not a salesperson. This keeps the lines of communication clear, and ensures expectations are met and often exceeded.

We start each project by gaining a detailed understanding of your requirements and broad design preferences. We work closely with you to understand your needs in terms of style, functionality and proportions. Whether you prefer to discuss by phone, email or face to face, our approach is flexible and tailored to you.

We can take design references from any number of areas. This could include character features within your home, your existing decor, or whatever inspires you.

Often a site visit is required. This provides a good opportunity to talk through potential ideas in more detail and take any necessary measurements.

The more information you can provide early in the process the better equipped we will be to meet your design brief. If you have a budget in mind, we encourage you to share this with us. It always helps us to focus on design details and material choices that will give you the best value.

Developing the Specification

The perfect solution to your project requires careful planning and so we consider the finest of details early in the process. Where possible we provide samples of materials and finishes being proposed to help with any decision-making. We can either provide these to help in forming an initial specification, or later at the detailed design stage.

We then set to work on setting out a written specification for your bespoke furniture. This includes any key design considerations, general material selection, timescales and costings. This then forms the basis of our written quote and includes delivery timescales.

We appreciate that a bespoke commission can be a significant undertaking. Meeting different priorities can be a careful balancing act. As such we are more than happy to discuss alternative options that ensure you obtain the best possible result.

Completing the Design

Once the specification and quote are agreed, we then request a deposit. Your project will then be scheduled and we will set to work on the detailed designs. We provide computer generated images and detailed drawings to help you visualise the finished article before we start making it.

At this stage your feedback is crucial in ensuring that we are meeting the brief. We work closely with you to fine-tune the design to your exact requirements.

Every design is completed with the utmost care and attention to detail.

Making Your Furniture

Once the design is signed off for manufacture, any special materials or components are ordered, and a cabinet maker begins to craft your commissioned piece. We provide updates on progress throughout, and can provide photos of your furniture being made. This ensures you remain part of the process and can enjoy seeing your furniture being crafted.

If your project involves fitted cabinetry, we complete as much work as possible in the workshop. This minimises the on-site work required and any disruption to you. Dates for fitting work are agreed well in advance.

Given the work poured into every piece, there is always a certain sadness in seeing completed projects leave the workshop. But equally we take great pride in the satisfaction of our customers when we deliver.

We always strive to ensure that we offer a friendly and collaborative experience, and one that is enjoyable for everyone involved.
